#AllezCulture

Europeana is the infrastructure supporting Europe's free digital library, museum and archive. Following a drastic cut in the budget for the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) from €9 billion to €1 billion Europeana is now being asked to once again put the case for funding under revised guidelines. It will face severe competition from other digital service infrastructure such as e-Justice, e-Health and Safer Internet.

#AllezCulture is a campaign to continue the funding of Europeana, look ahead for new partnerships, and open up collections to new audiences.

Our recent Europeana 2012–2013: usage and performance update shows, following five years of progress in digital cultural programmes, how Europeana continues to make cultural connections across Europe.

Creating Online Resources

Academic librarians are not just concerned with books and journals. There is a growing range of resources —content and tools— which their patrons need. The need to evaluate market and audience, to source and prepare the most appropriate content and user-interface and evaluate usage: these are common requirements for both academic and commercial propositions. Someone has to pay and justify the expenditure.

Free online registration is now open for the Strand Symposium on Digital Scholarship and ePublishing at King's College London on Thursday, 27 June 2013 08:45–17:30. Chaired by Anthony Watkinson, Creating Online Resources will feature presentations from Professor Carol Tenopir (Tennessee), David Nicholas [Evaluating usage of Europeana], Stuart Dunn and Richard Gartner (King's College) and Susan Whitfield of the British Library.

Engaging Learners

Librarians As Teachers 2013: Engaging learners in the digital age, is the title of a conference organised by the Academic and Research Libraries Group of CILIP at University of Warwick on 13 June 2013. It will include a presentation by David Nicholas of CIBER Research on the ways in which people learn and look for information in today’s digital world

Staying mobile

Laptop, netbook, smartphone, tablet, e-book: the categories and form-factors remain in flux, but the consumption of mobile data is here to stay. Derived from a long-running study of Europeana.eu, this new publication from the CIBER team confirms that information-seeking behavior is platform-specific and the latest platforms will remodel the data consumer and the conduits they use.

people, platforms, information

Adapting to disruptive technologies and creating value with people, platforms and information is the theme of Online Information 2013, London, 19–20 November. David Nicholas will be contibuting an analysis of "Information on the Go"— anywhere, anytime, any device".

unabatedly accumulating abundance of information

Routledge has set a December publication date for a new collection in the Critical Concepts in Media and Cultural Studies series: Information Science edited by David Nicholas and Eti Herman. In four volumes and over seventeen-hundred pages, this opus presents information science as a crucial site for scholarly exploration.

‘publish or perish’ multiplied

‘If you don’t recognise the author, be careful; if you don’t recognise the institution be even more careful, and if you don’t recognise the journal, it's definitely not worth looking at’.

The Trust project is a 15 month study of academic research and publishing funded by the Sloan Foundation. On 25 April Dave Nicholas and Anthony Watkinson were able to give some early insights from this research to publishers Taylor & Francis at their global editorial strategy meeting. Ring-tone changes

Not so long ago libraries banned the mobile, now that mobile is the library.

The second great digital transition— mobile data, will be the theme of David Nicholas' keynote at Information Science in an Age of Change an ISKO conference at the Institute of Information and Book Studies, University of Warsaw on 15–16 April 2013. ppt

o przyszłości bibliotek

Will the small-town local library soon be an anachronism? “Access to broadband is considered more important than the purchase of new books” say David Nicholas and Tom Dobrowolski of the University of Warsaw in The Future of Libraries. Book culture is based on erudition and knowledge but information technology is remote and algorithmic. What do the the young users of Wikipedia know of Diderot and d'Alembert?

Scottish Parliament

David Nicholas will be speaking to the Scottish Parliament on the subject of information seeking, sharing and reading behaviour of researchers on Tuesday 12 February.
