online personality

Reflex, the leading Swiss popular science magazine, has a "big ideas" issue on the subject of connectedness, social isolation and how modern technology shapes us. In an interview David Nicholas says

People may have dramatically different personalities online, mainly because they need no longer be judged by their physical appearances. That has major implications, and not only for our social relationships. Employers often use personality tests to establish if people work well in a team. But a lot of professional activity now takes place virtually, so if a potential employer wants to know if you are a team player, he or she should test your online personality, not your “real” one.

Usage factor

COUNTER sets international standards for the online usage statistics used by librarians and publishers. CIBER Research will be undertaking research for stage 3 of COUNTER's Usage Factor Project. This will collect data, test stability, and the impact of gaming scenarios for a Central Registry Demonstrator. Recomendations will be presented in April 2013 which should lead to a full implementation later in the year.

Born to Be Wired

Catalyst interviewed Dave Nicholas for an edition broadcast by ABC (Australia) on 18. October 2012.

Digital technology has changed almost every aspect of our lives: how we socialise, shop, entertain ourselves, and even manage our health. The speed of the digital takeover has led many to wonder whether today's children and teenagers, with little or no recollection of a life before broadband, are being fundamentally changed by the technology. Is this new access to information broadening and deepening our knowledge, or is fast information like fast food?

David Nicholas: ‘Mobiel internet is het einde van begrijpend lezen’

In the September issue of Tijdschrift voor Marketing David Nicholas is interviewed by Pascal Kuipers.

Things move faster online, there are more people and every kind of information gathering —it all goes very fast. Visiting a library in the past, you took your time. Now you browse dozens of libraries in one visit and quickly find what you need. Offer and the choice is increased. This affects the breadth of our information seeking. We are all connected to one big pipe of information. The supply has changed from a village shop in a giant shopping mall with a range in constant flux.
