Scholars' trust
2012-06-25 10:15
Dave Nicholas and Carol Tenopir of the College of Communication and Information, University of Tennessee, have been awarded $277,000 by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for a 15 month study of academic researchers' trust in scholarly information sources.
Much scholarly communication is now online: as
a consequence, scholars and researchers, especially younger ones, appear to
be changing their views regarding what is authoritative, good or can be
trusted. This follows through to what they read and cite, and where they choose to publish. If this is indeed the case then it strikes at some very fundamental scholarly beliefs,
especially those related to assessing quality, like peer review and Impact
Factors. This has implications for universities, funding bodies,
publishers, librarians and scholarship itself. There
is a good deal of vested interest in this area which constrains funding to research the topic and we are therefore especially grateful to the Sloan Foundation for their unfettered
support.

The three-year, EU funded PEER project has now published its final report.
For this project CIBER analysed the records of downloaded scholarly articles from 10 publishers and six open-access repositories over a 24 month window. The project covered only a small sample of publisher output —15,000 articles with a EU lead author from a sample of 116 journals— but nonetheless included over 7 million downloads each month.
